A Brief History
of the church in Angleton

While there is no doubt that the Lord’s church began almost two thousand years ago on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem; there seems to be some confusion as to when the Lord’s church in Angleton, Texas, began. One of the earliest members of the Angleton church was David Yancy, who moved to Angleton at the turn of the century to teach in a local college. When a storm blew the college away, Yancy stayed and began growing rice.
In 1916, current member Katy Willy Savoy met with local Christians in a courtroom at the Brazoria County Courthouse. By the early 1920’s, approximately ten families met weekly to worship God. J. F. Grubbs served as the minister; however, death, aging, and mobility soon took its toll. Several members died, some of the older members moved to live with relatives, and the nucleus of the church family disappeared.
In September of 1939, three sisters decided that it was time for a new congregation to be established in Angleton. The Rains sisters (Modena Rains, Norma Swedlund, and Erma Thompson) were instrumental in bringing Thornton Crews of Houston to Angleton to hold a tent meeting. As a result of this meeting, about twenty members of the church began to meet on a regular basis. Once again, they met in the courthouse. With donations from members and a loan from the bank, property was bought on the corner of Plum and Velasco streets, and a church building was erected by the members.

The construction of Dow Chemical Company in Freeport had a dramatic impact on the growth of the church in Angleton. As people from throughout the country flocked to the new jobs at Dow, the membership of the church grew. The original building was little more than a meeting house. With no baptistery in the building, baptisms took place in local rivers and bayous. With the increase in membership, though, came the financial ability to add four classrooms and a baptistery to the building in 1943.

construction Within ten years, the church family outgrew its building. By 1952, it was necessary to hold two morning services. Thus, the property on the corner of Wilkins and Downing streets was purchased. A larger building and a parsonage were built.

Throughout the next fifteen years, the building was enlarged several times to accommodate the growing number of Christians. Finally, a new auditorium was built in 1971. In 1998, the church completed renovation of the current auditorium to make the congregation more "baby friendly" and the building more accessible to those who have special needs.

At the present time, over 130 families consider this to be their church family.  Today the elders are David Eversdyk, David Johnson, Farmer Krejci, and  Leland Rodgers. The deacons are Walter Anderson, Scott Crabtree, Joe Davis,  Eugene Filipp, Bill Fry, Spencer Gilbert, Scott McLean, Curtis Sanford, Kim Smith, and Perry Stevens.  Under this leadership , the Angleton church is now looking forward to continued growth in the coming years. May God continue to bless the Angleton church, and may the city of Angleton be blessed by this family of God.
