TODAY IS NOT YESTERDAY

Yesterday great grandmother knew how to wash clothes properly. It began the night before by filling the wash boiler. Then, first thing in the morning, she started the fire under it while she was preparing breakfast. When the water was hot she started filling a washtub. The boiler was refilled, and to this was added one-half gallon of water taken from the back of the stove in which one cake of soap had been dissolved while she was cooking breakfast. She saw to it that the fire was rebuilt and kept hot while she washed the clothes on a rub-board. Of course she knew to keep the white clothes separate from the colored clothes being washed. She used a punching stick to remove clothes from the hot water into the clear rinse water. She would rinse well, wring out, and then put them through another rinse water, to which a little bluing (which could also be used to treat ant bites) had been added. Following additional wringing, the clothes were ready to hang outside on the line (regardless of the wind, or the cold). That was yesterday.

Today is not yesterday. We all know that. Times change (along with our ways of doing things). But truth? Truth remains constant. That’s why Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He saved men in the first century, and He saves me today. Their Savior is my Savior. He who was worthy of their trust and sacrifice is worthy of mine. He who sustained and strengthened them will do no less for me.

Immediately following the statement that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever," an admonition is given to be loyal to this changeless Christ. Men tend to look for that which is new and different, but the Bible says, "Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings" (Hebrews 13:9). Instead of being thus carried away, "it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace" which God has bestowed in the gospel.

The changeless Christ has a changeless message! My responsibility, and yours, is to "Contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."
