THE THRILL IS GONE
by Ron Carlson

I loved a recent cartoon in the "Parade" supplement of the Sunday newspaper.

Six weary commuters are discussing major life issues on their train ride to the office. One of the middle-aged fellows turns to the zombie in the seat beside him, and with a perplexed look on his face tells him, I was a radical in the 60's. I was a liberal in the 70's. I was a conservative in the 80's...Now I just follow sports."

For many weary baby boomers, the cartoonist captured the essence of contemporary apathy. Many folks just don't seem to care anymore. The thrill is gone. Zeal for life and all its noble causes has gone the way of polyester leisure suits and the typewriter. A lot of folks claim they are burned out on trying to make a difference. It makes me sad.

If I could rewrite the script, here is how it would read. "I was a radical in the 60's. I was a liberal in the 70's. I was a conservative in the 80's...Now I am a Christian."

There is no ideology so grand as Christianity. There is not cause as noble as Christianity. There is no reality as pressing as Christianity. There is no truth as high as Christianity. Plus, when you are a Christian, you don't have to retool every decade.

Life without Christ is doomed to be restless and futile. No philosophy or political persuasion can be substitute for a personal relationship with Christ. Following sports is an OK deal, but it is far from the Real Deal.
