Ten Qualities of a Good Bible Student 1. Must Have An Open Mind - The Bible must not be studied with "blinders" on. We must not be closed to the examination of our belief. (Acts 17:11) 2. Must Be Spiritually Minded - The Bible is a spiritual book and our desire to study must be to help us in our relationship with God. 3. Must Have a Passion to Know the Truth - Sincere Bible study calls for a hungering and thirsting after righteousness. It requires effort and commitment. (Matthew 5:6) 4. Must Be People of Prayer - We must communicate with the Author of the Book and ask for guidance and wisdom in our study and the application of it. (James 1:5) 5. Must Be Persistent - A diligent study of God’s word requires making and keeping time for periods of meditation. Many obstacles will present themselves, but we must not be easily "sidetracked." (Ephesians 5:15-16) 6. Must Be Willing to Accept Revealed Truth - Finding God’s will for our lives will be of no avail unless we accept and apply it to our lives. (John 8:31-32) 7. Must Be Willing to Rid Ourselves of All Preconceived Ideas - One of the reasons the religious leaders of His day rejected Jesus as the Christ is due to the fact He did not meet the standard "they" had set for Him. (Mark 12:10) 8. Must Be People of Courage - To accept the truth and apply it will result in change, and to change requires a great deal of courage. (James 2:26) 9. Must Take Into Consideration The Whole Counsel of God - It is easy to find passages "out of context" to justify our actions and to justify our actions and lifestyles. We must take time to study all of God’s counsel. (II Timothy 2:15)10. Accept The Bible As The Inspired Word of God - It is a unique book, different from all the others, a book worth taking the time to get to know. (II Timothy 3:16-17) Clarence DeLoach |
