THE SECURE AND ANXIETY-FREE LIFE
by John Gibson

Even our homes can be treacherous places, fraught with danger for the unsuspecting:

I left the room with silent dignity,
but caught my foot in the mat.
(George and Walter Grossmith, Diary of a Nobody)

Embarrassing! But in the journey of life there is greater danger than losing face. If one chooses the wrong path he can be certain that danger lies ahead. In speaking of the wicked God says, "Therefore their way shall be to them like slippery paths in the darkness, into which they shall be driven and fall; for I will bring evil upon them in the year of their punishment, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 23:12). Not a very pleasant prospect, if you ask me.

In contrast to the wicked who plow a crooked furrow through life, abandoning straight and level ways for "dark ways" that twist and turn, look at those who walk uprightly. What they find is the help of the Lord. As the apostle Peter said, "For the eyes of the lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil " (I Peter 3:12).

The book of Proverbs praises those who keep sound wisdom and discretion. They walk on their way securely and their feet do not stumble. They lie down at night without being afraid, and their sleep is sweet. And that, my friend, is a secure and anxiety-free life.

"For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught" (Proverbs 3:26).
