"PRAY ONE FOR ANOTHER"
by Clarence DeLoach

There is no greater paragraph on the purpose, place and power of prayer in the Christian's life than in James 5:13-20. Prayer in the life of the church and in the individual believer has premium importance in the New Testament.

I have observed that in matters of illness and sickness of a physical nature, we often in Bible classes, and from the pulpit in our assemblies name them and petition heaven's throne on their behalf. That is good, and I thank God for it. However, it seems that spiritual illnesses are seldom treated that way. WE NEED TO PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER SPIRITUALLY AS WELL.

Consider the great text in James 5. When there is sin in the life, James says that prayer and confession takes precedence. "Confess your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 5:16). The healing in view here is spiritual healing. The prayer spoken of here is preceded by penitence and confession.

We truly believe that prayer for the physically sick makes a difference. God answers prayer according to His will. My point is: prayer for the spiritually sick will make a difference, too. On your prayer list, include the names of those who are wrestling with some temptation; those who are having marital difficulty; those who are coping with some powerful list; those who see little importance in the assembly. There are so many spiritual afflictions among us. When those are acknowledged to God and confessed before men, the infection is exposed and healing and forgiveness is forthcoming. It may be a healthful experience for you to share a spiritual problem with another and have prayer together.

When we have sinned publicly against God and His family, let us confess it publicly before God and His church. Yes, the family has a right to know of your penitence and of your intentions. Then the church can forgive, receive, and fellowship. James stresses the importance of prayer in times of trouble; times of sickness; times of joy; times of spiritual weakness- -at all times!

Let's keep on praying! (Ephesians 6:18).
