LIVING BY FAITH

How does one manage to live when life gets difficult?

Habakkuk, a prophet of God in ancient Judah, lived in the midst of violence and corruption. There was the constant oppression of the weak by the strong, endless litigation, along with quarrels and deceitful dealings between people. In the middle of all this, Habukkuk came to see that God was working out His purposes even though it involved a very harsh discipline containing both violence and destruction.

In the meantime, Habakkuk was to wait. God told him, "For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end — it will not lie. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith" (Habukkuk 2:3-4).

Habakkuk seized upon these words, described the ordeal which was to come, and calmly announced, "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength."

Elizabeth Achtemeier quotes from a sermon by Charles Haddon Spurgeon on this passage, "We have been assured by people who think they know a great deal about the future that awful times are coming. Be it so; it need not alarm us, for the Lord reigneth. Stay yourself on the Lord...and you can rejoice in His name. If the worst comes to the worst, our refuge is in God; if the heavens shall fail the God of heaven will stand; when God cannot take care of His people under heaven He will take them above the heavens, and there they shall dwell with Him. Therefore, as far as you are concerned, rest; for you shall stand...at the end of the days."

Remember: The righteous shall live by his faith!
