LEANING ON JESUS
Many of us approach prayer, the panic button going off. Our prayers often are too frantic, "God help me!" The frantic mood of prayer can often frustrate the cool rational thinking by which anything is thought through. It also frustrates the deep sharing in communion with God that He intends for us to have.
If we are to make connection with the Lord of heaven and earth, we need to get His telephone number. "Call to me and I will answer and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know" (Jeremiah 33:3). When we are in touch with His great mind, it is sure to be superior in insight and wisdom than our own. As we talk with God, we are finding the answers we cannot know by ourselves.
One of the old songs in our hymnals is the title for this article. It states that when we lean on Jesus, we are safe from all harm. "Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?" (I Peter 3:13).
There is another hymn that was written in 1976 called "Learning to Lean."
Im
learning to lean, learning to lean,
Learning to lean on Jesus.
Finding more power than I ever dreamed;
Im learning to lean on Jesus...
He helps me with each task if only I ask;
Every day now Im learning to lean.
Prayer is not the panacea that excuses us of our responsibility. Things that we can do, we ought to do. Prayer helps us lean on Jesus so we can be motivated to do our part. We are to be persistent in prayer and in work. Paul writes "Having done all...stand" (Ephesians 6:13).
Dont let negative thinking take you for a ride. If you think something is hopeless, your state of mind will actually attract further trouble. "Every day now Im learning to lean."
