Where Is The Awe?

It’s been many years now, but I can vividly recall the feelings which swept over me at the age of 14 when I first visited the State Capitol in Austin, Texas. The building was large and impressive, but something grander awaited. I had no idea that in a few minutes I would be ushered into the office of Governor Alan Shivers. Shivers went up my spine (pardon the pun) as I was invited to sit in his chair behind a very imposing desk. I was overwhelmed with a feeling of awe.

I’ve grown older now, and the years have done something to me. While it would still be interesting to visit that office, I doubt that I would be overwhelmed. Not many times in adult life can one recapture the awe and wonder which filled one’s youth.

Many things have high value, but they become so common in our lives we lose the ability to react. That’s a troublesome thing — a tragic thing. Sometimes, just for a moment, the feeling returns, but must it be fleeting?

There are things I live with day in and day out: Bible reading and study, prayer, meditation, worship, and communion. They form the fabric of my life — and therein lies the danger. The holy may become common. Is it a problem you have experienced, or does it belong only to preachers?

Is there awe when you turn to the precious Bible, book divine?

Do you anticipate the blessed hour of prayer?

Is it a thrill for you to worship God in the beauty of holiness?

Do you look forward to meeting in sweet communion where the feast divine is spread?

Is singing with the spirit and understanding a joy?

Can you say with the psalmist, "I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord’"?
